She has been NIH-funded for >20 years along with her research partner, Dr. Teri Hernandez, and she was awarded the ADA 2018 Norbert Freinkel award for her research, teaching and clinical contributions in diabetes/obesity in pregnancy. She has mentored >25 MD, PhD trainees/junior faculty in OB-Gyn, Neonatology and Endocrinology on the influence of maternal obesity and diabetes on the intrauterine environment and their metabolic effects on infant body composition and later risk for childhood obesity. She served on the Editorial Board for “Diabetes Care”, is Past Chair for the ADA Scientific Planning Committee for Pregnancy and has served on multiple national guideline committees on thyroid disease and diabetes in pregnancy. She earned her doctorate at Columbia University in New York, where she studied the effects of genetics on body weight and metabolism. She became fascinated with the metabolic benefits of breastfeeding after the birth of her daughter in 2016. She moved to Denver in 2018 to develop new ways to study the human breast during lactation by looking at the cells found in milk. Over 20 years at CU with her research partner, Dr. Linda Barbour, she has conducted controlled clinical studies in pregnancy focused on nutrition, glucose and lipid metabolism, infant growth, and early life exposures.
